TDV Ricky Vani Frontline is the stage name of Tashreeq de Villiers, a multi-talented musician and performer from Woodstock, Cape Town. He is a true all-rounder who makes many different styles of music, including Hip Hop, Gqom, Amapiano, and Klopse anthems. He has also performed in theatre musicals and was even nominated for a Fleur du Cap award for his acting.

TDV did not have an easy start in life. He spent time sleeping on the back seats of cars, on friends’ couches, and even on the streets of Cape Town during winter. He went through difficult times involving gangs and drugs, but he turned his life around through music. Now he uses his story to inspire other kids from the Cape Flats to believe that they can achieve great things too. One of his most powerful messages is that it does not matter where you come from, what you have been through, or what you have done, you can still change your life for the better.
Before he became a rapper, TDV was known for his singing voice. He performed in Malay choirs and Minstrels competitions. He also acted in hit theatre shows like Aunty Merle It Is A Girl alongside comedian Marc Lottering, and Danger in the Dark directed by David Kramer.
One of the biggest moments of TDV’s career came when he performed at the switching on of the lights in front of the Cape Town City Hall. He sang in front of 80,000 people and stole the show. The crowd sang along to all of his songs. He said it was the biggest night of his life in entertainment and a dream come true for a little boy from Woodstock.
TDV has released many albums and EPs. One of his Amapiano EPs is called Evolution, which dropped in July 2024. It has four tracks and features beat makers like Dlala B Music, M Jay, Ice SA, King Wayne, and DJ Listo. He said this project was meant to show people a different side of him and prove that he is a versatile artist who can do it all.
Another one of his EPs is called Nightmares, released in November 2024. This one is a Hip Hop and Real Rap project with five tracks about loyalty, love, respect, and the reality of living on the Cape Flats. TDV says hip hop for him is about reporting from the street on behalf of people who do not have a voice. Some of the tracks on Nightmares include Firearm, Loyalty, Nightmares, Last Laugh, and Mataambu.
TDV has also collaborated with many other well known South African artists. He appeared on a song called Thug On with YoungstaCPT and Jstar, which was part of YoungstaCPT’s album 32 Years Ahead of Time. He has also made songs like Dala Mama featuring Weh Sliiso and Foster, and Doen Jou Ding featuring Tolla da Beh. Other popular tracks include In My Heart featuring Naz Leeman, and his own song The Ricky Chase.
TDV Ricky Vani Frontline is an inspiring example of someone who overcame homelessness, hardship, and difficult choices to become a successful artist. He proves that your past does not decide your future. He also shows that being an artist can mean many things, you can rap, sing, act, and dance all at once.
