Mr Werkhom New Songs: Afrikaans gqom

Mr Werkhom is one of the four members of a South African music group called The Temple Boys. The group comes from Ravensmead, which is a neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa. They make a style of dance music called Gqom (pronounced like “gome”), which has deep, heavy beats that are perfect for moving your feet.

Mr Werkhom’s real name is Chadley Dick, and he is also known as Charley or Chadley “Mr Werkhom”. Interestingly, he did not start out loving music. He was actually very passionate about soccer first. He went to his friends who were already making music and asked if he could try making a song with them, just as an experiment. That song was called “Werkhom 2.0,” and that is how he discovered he had musical talent. He never went back to soccer after that.

The Temple Boys started making music together in 2018 when they were all students at Ravensmead High School. They did not have a fancy studio or expensive equipment. Instead, they recorded songs right from their bedrooms using very basic gear. Their big breakthrough came with a song called “Saggies,” which became a huge hit on social media platforms like TikTok. The song was so popular that even famous musicians like the late rapper AKA danced to it. The group has since won awards, including Newcomer of the Year and Song of the Year at the Public Health Entertainment Awards.

The stage names the group members chose all reflect their personalities. Mr Werkhom’s name, along with Mr Gham, Mr Areveerend, and Mr Stifler, were chosen based on how each person acts or what they are like as individuals. The Temple Boys use their music to send a positive message to other young people, especially those living in the Cape Flats area. They encourage kids to focus on their education and to stay away from trouble. Their saying is, “Don’t pick up the gun, pick up the mic.”

Mr Werkhom and The Temple Boys are an inspiring example of how you do not need expensive things to follow your dreams. They started with almost nothing, just a few friends and an idea, and built a successful music career through hard work and creativity. Their music is energetic and fun, and their story proves that talent can be found in the most unexpected places, even in a bedroom with a cheap microphone.
