Velemseni biography: Velemseni Ndzimandze, known as Velemseni, is a guitarist and vocalist from Eswatini. Her music blends with jazz, neo-soul, and alternative Afro-pop, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of her homeland.
Early Career and Influences
Velemseni began her musical journey as a backing vocalist for prominent Eswatini artists, including Bholoja, Siyinqaba, and Nomalungelo Dladla. These collaborations provided her with a solid foundation and exposure to diverse musical styles. Influenced by artists such as Joan Armatrading, Grace Jones, and Tsepo Tshola, as well as her mother’s musical tastes, Velemseni developed a unique sound that resonates with authenticity and depth.
Debut Album: “We Are People”
In 2014, Velemseni released her debut album, We Are People, an 11-track project that showcased her soothing vocals and strong musicality. The album received favorable airplay on major Eswatini radio stations, including EBIS1 and EBIS2. Produced in collaboration with David F from France, Martin Berauer from Austria, and Eswatini’s own Bholoja, the album features tracks like “Utawubuya Nini,” “Ungatsandzeleleni?,” and the title track “We Are People.”
Notable Performances and Projects
Velemseni’s warm, mellow voice and acoustic guitar have graced several prestigious events, such as the annual Bushfire Festival, FNB Smooth Fest, The Orbit Jazz Club, and the State Opening of the Parliament of Eswatini. Her jazz and classical foundation infuses her music with a fresh African rhythm and captivating sensuality.
In 2020, she released the music video for her song “Barely,” which received significant attention and was featured on platforms like Trace Africa and MTV Base.
Recent Endeavors
Demonstrating her innovative spirit, Velemseni introduced a new live performance concept in 2023 called “Live on the Lawn.” This initiative features intimate outdoor performances, allowing audiences to experience her music in a unique and personal setting.
