KENA biography: Ayanda Selwyn Tsela, known as KENA, is an Eswatini-born rapper, Born in 1991, KENA is one of the early pioneers of Kasi rap music in Eswatini, a genre that blends local vernacular with hip-hop beats to reflect township life.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Growing up in Matsapha, Eswatini, KENA was influenced by his godfather, Mil-G, a prominent figure in Swazi hip-hop. His passion for rap ignited in 2004 after hearing PRO’s performances, leading him to craft lyrics in both English and SiSwati. In 2012.

Debut Album and Recognition

In 2017, KENA released his debut album, “Tsemba LemaGinsa,” an autobiographical project that delves into his experiences growing up fatherless and pays homage to his community. The album’s raw energy and street-centric storytelling earned it critical acclaim, leading to two nominations at the 2018 MTN SWAMA Awards for Best Hip-Hop Song and Male Artist of the Year. To promote the album, KENA embarked on a self-funded tour, which included a performance at Hipnotik Festival 2018.

Live Performances and Collaborations

Transitioning from studio recordings to live performances, KENA headlined his first event with a live band in 2019, titled “KENA GOES LIVE,” marking a significant milestone in his career. His dynamic stage presence has led to collaborations with various artists, including a notable duet with DJ Master P and Nomalungelo, which earned a nomination for Best Collaboration Song at the 2019 MTN SWAMA Awards.

Recent Projects

Continuing his artistic evolution, KENA released the single “Tinsimbi Tebelungu” from his latest album “Asylum” in late 2022. The project has been well-received, showcasing his growth as an artist and his commitment to addressing contemporary issues through his music.
